Winter Solstice and the Great Conjunction 2020
The winter solstice this year happens on Dec. 21. On that day we get to witness the “Great Conjunction” – where the planets, Saturn and Jupiter appear to almost kiss in the sky. The last time we were able to view this bright sight was 800 years ago. The winter solstice is the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere. It is being referred to as the ‘Christmas Star of 2020
According to NASA, “the two planets will appear just a tenth of a degree apart” and such an event will not happen again in the next 60 years, that is, until 2080
The ‘Great Conjunction’ of Jupiter and Saturn will be the closest since 1623, which is 13 years after Galileo built his first telescope and discovered four new ‘stars’ orbiting the Jupiter.
